You know that saying – “With age comes wisdom”?
Yeah, I don’t fully agree with that!
Because honestly, growing older doesn’t automatically mean you grow wiser. It’s not the candles on your birthday cake that teach you things; it’s the moments in between. The heartbreaks, the late-night conversations, the random road trips, the quiet days when you’re just trying to keep it together.
As a kid, I thought adults had it all figured out. I used to look at people older than me and think, they must have a plan! A direction. Some secret manual to life that I’d get access to one day.
Spoiler: there is no manual!
I turned 26 a few days ago, and I’ve realized that no one, absolutely no one… has it all figured out. We’re all just trying to make sense of things as we go. Some days I feel proud of how far I’ve come; other days, I’m questioning everything.
But in all these ups and downs, life has been a wonderful teacher….unpredictable, funny, harsh, but always right on time.
So, here’s a little list – 26 things I’ve learned before turning 26.
Some through experience, some through mistakes, and a few through quiet reflection.

1. Be Kind, Always
Kindness really does come back. Maybe not in the same way or from the same person, but it always finds its way back to you. People remember how you made them feel, not what you said, not what you wore, and not what you did. And being kind to yourself? That’s even harder but so necessary. You’re doing your best. Be gentle with yourself when things don’t go as planned.
2. Don’t assume, Just ask.
So many misunderstandings in life come from assumptions. “They didn’t reply, maybe they’re mad.” “They didn’t call, maybe they don’t care.” In reality, people have their own lives, struggles, and distractions. Ask. Clarify. Half the time, it’s not that deep.
3. Always judge a book by its cover. (Kind of.)
I know this sounds wrong, but hear me out. You can tell a lot by someone’s energy …the way they speak to a waiter, the tone they use when they’re angry, how they treat people who can’t offer them anything. The “cover” isn’t about looks; it’s about energy. And your gut usually knows the truth long before your mind catches up.
4. Love with all your heart.
Even when it doesn’t work out. Love is never wasted. The love you give, whether it’s to a person, a pet, or even your work…. always finds its way back to you in unexpected ways. And just because something ended doesn’t mean it wasn’t beautiful. Give love freely, but don’t let it define your worth.
5. Forgive and forget.
This one’s tough. Forgiveness isn’t about saying what they did was okay, it’s about choosing peace over bitterness. And once you forgive, really let it go. Stop revisiting old wounds. You can’t heal if you keep picking the scab.
6. Keep learning and unlearning.
Some lessons come from books, others from people, and some from pain. But what’s equally important is unlearning the things that no longer serve you; outdated beliefs, limiting thoughts, or even versions of yourself that you’ve outgrown. Growth is both learning and letting go.
7. Put yourself first.
You cannot pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself doesn’t make you selfish, it makes you grounded. Learn to say no without guilt. Learn to walk away from things that drain you. You are the only constant in your life; treat yourself like you matter.
8. Parents are guiding lights, but not always right.
Our parents come from a different time, different fears, different priorities. They mean well, always. But sometimes, they’re wrong. And that’s okay. You can love them deeply and still choose a different path.
9. Expect nothing.
This one’s hard to practice but life-changing once you do. Stop expecting people to behave the way you would. Not everyone loves, cares, or communicates like you. The lesser your expectations, the lighter your heart.
10. Choose practicality over emotions.
Being emotional isn’t a flaw, but letting emotions drive every decision can be exhausting. Step back and ask yourself, is this helping me or just hurting me? Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is be rational.
11. Take charge of your life.
You’re not a supporting character in your own story. Make choices for yourself. Set boundaries. If something doesn’t sit right with you, speak up. Silence might keep the peace, but it often costs you your own peace of mind.
12. Pause before reacting.
In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to say things we don’t mean. Take a breath. Walk away. Come back when you’re calm. Responding with clarity instead of anger is one of the most underrated forms of maturity.
13. Asking for help doesn’t make you weak.
You don’t have to do everything alone. It’s okay to say, “I’m not okay.” It’s okay to lean on someone when you’re tired. Vulnerability doesn’t mean weakness, it means you trust yourself enough to be honest.
14. Don’t seek validation from others.
This one hit me hard. I used to wait for people’s approval, for someone to say, “you’re doing great” before I actually felt that I was. But truth is, people’s opinions change like weather. Do what feels right to you. Post that picture. Take that risk. Change that job. You don’t need the world’s permission to live your own life.
15. Be grateful.
Gratitude changes your lens on everything. The more you notice the small joys; morning sunlight, a warm cup of chai, that one friend who listens without judgment…. the more abundant life feels. Gratitude turns ordinary days into blessings.
16. Travel solo at least once.
There’s something so liberating about being alone in a new place. You learn to navigate, to trust your instincts, to find comfort in your own company. It’s scary at first, but it teaches you the kind of confidence no classroom ever could.
17. Enjoy the little things.
Because one day, you’ll look back and realize those were the big things. Late-night drives, family dinners, inside jokes, quiet mornings, those are the moments that truly matter. Life isn’t a highlight reel, it’s a collage of small, beautiful, ordinary things.
18. Visit your grandparents more often.
They don’t need grand gestures…just your time. The sparkle in their eyes when they see you is unmatched. You’ll never regret giving them your time, but you might regret not doing it enough.
19. Have a routine, but don’t let it control you.
A routine keeps you grounded, but leave room for spontaneity. Not every hour needs to be planned. Sometimes the best days are the ones that just… happen.
20. Don’t get too attached.
People come and go, that’s the nature of life. Love them deeply, but don’t lose yourself when they leave. I get attached to dogs more than humans (and honestly, that hurts enough). But learning to love without clinging is a strength worth mastering.
21. Never say never.
Because life has a funny way of changing your “never” into “maybe” and then into “definitely.” Stay open to possibilities. You never know what…or who…. might surprise you.
22. Take care of your body.
Drink more water. Stretch. Sleep properly. Move your body not to change it, but to thank it. You get only one body, treat it with the same respect you give to your dreams.
23. Not everything deserves a reaction.
You don’t have to explain yourself to everyone. You don’t owe the world an answer. Sometimes peace looks like walking away and saying nothing at all.
24. Stop comparing your journey.
Everyone blooms at their own pace. You might be on chapter 2 while someone else is on chapter 10, and that’s okay. You’re not behind; you’re just on your own timeline.
25. It’s okay to outgrow friendships.
Some people are meant to stay for a few chapters, not the whole story. It doesn’t make the friendship less meaningful. People grow, evolve, and drift apart, and that’s perfectly okay. Let it happen with love, not guilt.
26. Be financially independent, and financially aware.
Money won’t solve everything, but it gives you stability and choice. Learn about savings, investments, and spending wisely. Independence isn’t just emotional, it’s financial too. The freedom that comes from being able to take care of yourself? Unmatched.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned before turning 26, it’s that nobody really has it figured out and maybe that’s the point. Life isn’t about knowing all the answers; it’s about learning how to live through the questions.
Here’s to growing, unlearning, and becoming a little more you every year.
If you’re in your twenties and feel a little lost, SAME!!.
But maybe, we’re not lost at all. Maybe we’re just finding our way…
